Kirinyaga Governor Urges Road Safety After Fatal Mwea-Embu Crash Claims Eight Lives

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has extended her condolences to families affected by a deadly road accident on the Mwea–Embu Highway that claimed eight lives.

The crash occurred on Saturday morning near Murubara, close to the Kimbimbi Red Soil area, involving a parcel truck and a tuk-tuk carrying rice farm workers.

Details of the Tragic Accident

• The parcel truck, traveling from Mwea to Embu, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the tuk-tuk.
• Five passengers in the tuk-tuk died, along with one occupant of the truck and two pedestrians struck during the collision.
• Three others sustained injuries; two were admitted to Kimbimbi Hospital, while one with critical injuries was transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
• The parcel truck driver survived with minor injuries and was arrested as investigations proceed.

Governor's Response and Call for Safety

Governor Waiguru described the incident as a heartbreaking loss and urged all road users to adopt greater responsibility. She prayed for comfort for the bereaved families and healing for the injured.

"This tragedy should remind us all to prioritise road safety and foster a culture that safeguards every life," she said.

Context of Recent Road Accidents

The Kirinyaga crash happened just a day after a separate fatal accident near Lessos Junction on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, where seven people died and eight were seriously injured following a collision involving a trailer and two public service vehicles.
