Zambian security agencies have apprehended a 56-year-old Kenyan national suspected of orchestrating cyber activities aimed at disrupting state systems ahead of the country’s general election on August 13, 2026.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security confirmed the arrest following an intelligence-led operation involving multiple defence and security units. Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo revealed the individual was allegedly contracted to interfere with critical government infrastructure.
Wider Cybercrime Investigation
This arrest is part of a broader probe into a plot to destabilize Zambia and compromise the electoral process. Authorities also detained three former senior government officials accused of providing technical support to disrupt the elections. All suspects remain in lawful custody as investigations continue.
Concerns Over Military Intelligence Breach
During the operation, security forces seized electronic devices containing sensitive military intelligence, raising alarms over unauthorized access to protected information. The government emphasized heightened vigilance to safeguard national security and maintain peace throughout the electoral period.
"The Defence and Security wings remain on high alert to protect national peace, security, and the rule of law," the Ministry stated, assuring ongoing lawful measures to shield critical systems from cyber threats.
