Kenya is set to import maize to supplement local supplies as drought conditions threaten the country's production, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has confirmed.

During a visit to Trans Nzoia County, CS Kagwe highlighted that the government is actively sourcing maize from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region to mitigate the risk of food shortages. The drought is expected to reduce maize yields, but the government has put measures in place to cushion the impact.

Seed Stocks and Climate Adaptation

Despite the dry weather, Kagwe assured that the nation’s maize seed reserves remain adequate. He estimated a loss of 25 to 30 percent of the seed crop but emphasized that sufficient quantities will be available to support farmers in the upcoming planting season.

The CS acknowledged that shifting weather patterns, driven by climate change, require a reassessment of agricultural and livestock strategies. The government continues to rely on forecasts and guidance from the Kenya Meteorological Department to prepare for droughts, El Niño events, and other extreme weather.

Dynamic Response and Other Imports

Kagwe stressed that the government’s response will remain flexible to adapt to unpredictable climatic conditions. Contingency plans are underway to help farmers manage the evolving challenges in both crop and livestock sectors.

In addition to maize, Kenya will maintain imports of wheat and rice to bridge gaps between local production and demand. The CS noted that wheat production is limited domestically, while rice consumption is rising due to population growth, urbanization, and changing dietary habits.

Positive Developments in Sugar Production

The Agriculture CS also reported a significant increase in sugar production, with output doubling for the first time. This growth is expected to reduce Kenya’s reliance on sugar imports substantially.

Overall, despite the anticipated difficult agricultural season, the government remains committed to safeguarding food security through proactive measures and continuous monitoring of weather trends.
