The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has initiated an investigation following the illegal felling of 350 young trees in the Makunga forest block of Saboti Forest Station, located within the Mount Elgon ecosystem in Trans Nzoia County.

The trees were reportedly cut down overnight and left lying on the forest floor. KFS has since increased security measures in the affected area to prevent further destruction while efforts continue to identify those responsible.

Clarifications and Community Concerns

Contrary to circulating online reports, KFS confirmed that the Shikhendu forest block was not impacted by the incident. The agency described the felling as a deliberate act by a small group aiming to provoke unrest within the local community.

KFS statement: "The illegal felling of trees within Makunga forest block seems to be maliciously instigated by a few individuals to incite the community. Protection and security have since been enhanced, and those found culpable will be arrested and charged under the Forest Conservation and Management Act (amendment) 2026."

Call for Public Cooperation

KFS has appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators. Tips can be reported to the Saboti Forest Office, the County Forest Conservator in Trans Nzoia, or the nearest police station.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Illegal Logging

In a bid to curb illegal timber trade nationwide, KFS launched the Timber Tracker System (TTS) in March. This digital platform enhances traceability and oversight of timber movement from forests to markets.
