The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has launched an inquiry into the illegal logging of 350 young trees in the Makunga forest block within Saboti Forest Station, part of the Mount Elgon ecosystem in Trans Nzoia County.
In a statement released on August 13, KFS confirmed that the trees were cut down overnight and abandoned at the site. The agency emphasized that contrary to some reports, the Shikhendu block was not affected by this incident.
KFS described the destruction as a deliberate act by a small group aiming to provoke community unrest. The service has since enhanced security measures in the area and warned that anyone involved in forest offences will face arrest and prosecution.
This incident follows growing concerns about illegal logging in the region. Recently, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Alason Hussein visited Saboti Forest to evaluate prior damage and cautioned local residents against unauthorized activities within the forest, highlighting its critical role as a water catchment area for parts of the county.
Residents are urged to report any information regarding the tree felling to the Saboti Foresters' office, the Trans Nzoia County Forest Conservator, or the nearest police station to aid ongoing investigations.
