American rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, will headline two concerts at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg, Russia, this October. The shows, hosted in the 70,000-seat venue, sold out within hours of tickets going on sale.

Ticket prices ranged from 9,000 to 160,000 roubles (£78 to £1,394). These performances make Ye the most prominent Western artist to visit Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a period during which many international musicians have avoided the country.

Background and Tour Challenges

Ye’s announcement follows a turbulent period marked by backlash over antisemitic and pro-Nazi comments he made in 2022. He publicly apologized earlier this year, attributing his remarks to a brain injury and bipolar disorder. Despite this, his 2026 European tour faced cancellations in several countries, including the UK, France, Poland, Italy, and the Czech Republic. The UK Home Office barred him from entry, citing concerns for public welfare.

Concerts proceeded in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Albania, attracting audiences that included many fans unable to see him at home. Reviewers praised the Madrid show’s production and Ye’s focused performance.

Reception in Russia

Ye’s plans to perform in Russia have been rumored since 2024, when he visited to celebrate a collaborator’s birthday. However, not all reactions have been positive. Conservative Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov urged Ye to replace his setlist with traditional Russian songs, reflecting nationalist sentiments.

Before the war, Western artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Muse frequently toured Russia. Since then, only a few artists, mainly less prominent, have performed there. Last year, Jason Derulo also played concerts in St Petersburg and Moscow.

Controversy and Image Rehabilitation

Ye’s antisemitic statements in 2022 led to social media bans and severed ties with major fashion brands. His public apology came alongside the release of his album Bully and the start of his world tour, prompting some skepticism.

Despite the controversy, Ye’s Russian shows are highly anticipated, with fans eager to witness his return to the stage in a country where Western acts are now rare.
