Josh Tarling to Race at Vuelta Days After Brother’s Tragic Cycling Accident
British cyclist Josh Tarling will compete in the Vuelta a España days after his brother Finlay died in a tragic crash during the Volta a Portugal.
British cyclist Josh Tarling is set to participate in the Vuelta a España starting August 22, just eight days after the tragic death of his younger brother Finlay Tarling.
Finlay, aged 19, died in a crash during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal while racing for the NSN Development Team on a 166.8 km route between Melgaço and Fafe. A vehicle unexpectedly entered the closed race route and struck him, sending shockwaves through the cycling world.
Despite the devastating loss, Josh has chosen to honour his brother by continuing to race. Their parents, Dawn and Michael Tarling, expressed full support for Josh’s decision in a heartfelt Instagram message, highlighting the close bond shared between the brothers.
"Joshua will be riding the Vuelta in honour of Finlay, with the full support of his family and his team," they wrote. "Josh has always been a loving and supportive big brother, and Finlay was immensely proud of him. This race is a tribute to that love and pride."
The tragedy deeply affected the global cycling community. The Cyclistes Professionnels Associés described Finlay's death as leaving them "speechless and filled with anger," while Portuguese President António José Seguro paid tribute, noting the profound mourning felt by both the peloton and the host nation.
The 2025 Vuelta a España will commence in Monaco and conclude in Granada on September 13. For Josh Tarling, every kilometre of the race will carry the memory of his brother and a deeper significance beyond the competition itself.
