Iranian and Omani officials are reportedly close to agreeing on a new maritime corridor through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This route would be distinct from the existing northern and southern passages.

Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, told state media that the proposed route would respect the sovereign rights of both nations while safeguarding their national interests and security. However, specific details of the new corridor have not yet been disclosed.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's oil consumption passes under normal conditions. Iran has maintained effective control over the strait since the outbreak of conflict on February 28.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that negotiations with Oman were in their final stages, though Oman has not publicly commented on the matter.

Baqaei emphasized that the new route agreement is separate from the ongoing closure status of the Strait of Hormuz. He attributed the closure to the United States, citing its naval blockade of Iran and other hostile actions as reasons for the disruption.

Relations between Tehran and Washington have been strained, with a mid-June agreement aimed at ending hostilities and addressing issues around the strait eventually collapsing amid mutual accusations of violations and subsequent military actions.
