During the Beyond 2030 national conversation held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), a man experienced visible nerves while presenting an innovation plan directly to President William Ruto.
As he spoke about addressing Kenya's persistent brain drain problem, the man accidentally dropped a plastic container he was using as a teaching aid. He paused to regain his composure before continuing his presentation, drawing a lighthearted response from the President.
Harnessing Diaspora Talent Through Innovation
The presenter emphasized that attracting Kenyan professionals back from abroad requires a focus on innovation, particularly in technology sectors where the diaspora can contribute their expertise. He introduced Hack Kenya@100, a network of young innovators committed to creating homegrown solutions to national challenges ahead of Kenya's centennial.
This initiative encourages participation from diverse groups including students, farmers, boda boda riders, developers, artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Their projects span areas such as agriculture, energy, artificial intelligence, education, health, mobility, infrastructure, manufacturing, the creative economy, and governance.
The Idea Capsule Concept
To illustrate his point, the presenter used a transparent plastic container as a metaphorical "idea capsule." This capsule symbolizes a collective repository of ideas contributed by Kenyans from all walks of life, aimed at advancing the country's development, which Hack Kenya@100 estimates currently stands at 75% completion.
He explained that the capsule would circulate among communities, preserving aspirations and memories. When Kenya celebrates its 100th anniversary, the capsule would be opened to evaluate whether the nation's goals have been achieved.
"Instead of waiting for government intervention, what ideas have you contributed to this capsule?" he challenged the audience.

President Ruto responded warmly to the presenter's moment of nervousness, sharing a smile and encouraging him to continue. The interaction underlined the importance of youth-led innovation and diaspora engagement in Kenya's development trajectory.
