IEBC Confirms August 10, 2027, as Next General Election Date Despite Court Ruling
IEBC says the 2027 polls will proceed on August 10 as scheduled, following a High Court ruling that challenged the election timeline but suspended its implementation.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has affirmed that the 2027 General Election will be held on August 10, 2027, despite a recent High Court ruling that declared the poll date unconstitutional.
During a Citizen TV interview on August 23, IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu explained that the court's decision, which set the election date as August 11, 2026, was suspended pending implementation after the 2027 election. This suspension allows the commission to continue preparations according to the existing electoral calendar.
"The judgment itself suspended implementation until after the 2027 General Elections, so we are compliant with both the law and the ruling by proceeding with the August 10, 2027 date," said Nderitu.
Background of the Court Ruling
The Malindi High Court, in a judgment issued on August 7, challenged the IEBC's election timeline, stating that presidential elections must occur within the fifth year of the incumbent's term, specifically the second Tuesday of August, rather than after completing a full five-year term.
Justice Mugure Thande declared that holding the election on any date other than the second Tuesday in August 2026 would violate several constitutional articles, including Articles 2, 3, 10, 136(1) & (2)(a), 142(1), 24, 25(1) & (5), rendering such an election null and void.
IEBC’s Stance and Next Steps
Despite the ruling, the IEBC maintains that it will conduct the general election on August 10, 2027, as per the current electoral cycle. The commission is also advancing other preparations, including setting deadlines for political parties:
- Submission of authorized persons by October 15, 2026
- Certification of nomination rules by October 30, 2026
- Submission of nomination rules by November 6, 2026
The 2027 General Election will see Kenyans vote for the president, senators, members of the National Assembly, county women representatives, governors, and county assembly members.
