The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recently introduced a biometric system that reduces the processing time for Police Clearance Certificates to approximately 24 hours. However, Huduma Kenya has clarified that this expedited timeline applies only to applications submitted under the new system.
Applicants who lodged their requests before the rollout of the instant processing platform may experience longer waits as their cases are still being processed under the previous system.
New Biometric System Enhances Efficiency
Launched on July 23, 2026, the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS) integrates fingerprint, palmprint, and facial recognition data into a unified secure database. DCI Director General Amin Mohammed highlighted that this technology significantly enhances the accuracy and speed of criminal record verification.
"The new system fast-tracks police clearance certificate processing, cutting the turnaround time from 14 days to about one day under optimal conditions," said Amin.

- Applicants with pending requests submitted before the upgrade should continue monitoring their eCitizen accounts for updates.
