Homa Bay Governor Condemns Violence After Ugandan Woman’s Death at Political Rally

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has condemned the violent clashes that led to the death of Ugandan national Mama Noureen Nalwanga during a political rally in the county.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, amid a procession organized by the opposition-aligned Linda Mwananchi movement. Mama Noureen, locally known as "NyaUganda," was fatally struck by a campaign vehicle amid the chaos.

Visiting the deceased’s family in Mbuni Estate, Governor Wanga expressed her condolences and called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the events.

Governor’s Statement

  • "Mama Noureen Nalwanga tragically lost her life after being overrun by a campaign vehicle during the Linda Mwananchi rally," Wanga said in a statement on August 19.
  • She emphasized her long-standing opposition to political violence, citing nearly 20 years of activism since her student leadership days.
  • Wanga reaffirmed Homa Bay's status as an ODM stronghold, highlighting the party’s role in securing democratic freedoms including speech, association, and peaceful assembly.
  • She warned against allowing political tensions to erode these fundamental rights or escalate into further violence.

Call for Peace and Accountability

The governor urged political leaders and supporters to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and prioritize respect for human life over political rivalry.

She appealed to the National Police Service to conduct an independent and impartial investigation and hold accountable anyone responsible for the violence, regardless of political affiliation.

"Justice must be served to honor Mama Noureen's family, the injured, and the people of Homa Bay," Wanga stated.
