Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has expressed confidence in securing a second term, aiming to become the first governor in the city's history to serve consecutive terms.
Speaking about his re-election bid, Sakaja said he intends to engage Nairobi residents by presenting his manifesto and reviewing his achievements so far. He emphasized the importance of leadership continuity to avoid disruptions in the city's development.
Focus on Consistent Leadership
Sakaja highlighted that frequent leadership changes have hindered Nairobi's growth and left numerous projects incomplete. He argued that stable governance is crucial for residents to fully benefit from devolution.
"The start and stop in Nairobi leadership denies residents proper development and leaves projects unfinished. To give Nairobians a feel of devolution, it is good we have consistent leadership," Sakaja stated.
Challenges and Resilience
The governor's determination follows a challenging period marked by severe floods that caused fatalities and widespread damage across Nairobi. The disaster exposed weaknesses in drainage and infrastructure, leading to public criticism and calls for his resignation.
In response, Sakaja firmly rejected resignation demands, reaffirming his commitment to tackling the city's issues within existing resource constraints.
"I am not resigning, I’m working. And every day, I’ll do my best given the limitations that we have as a city," he said.
Financial Constraints and Project Management
Sakaja acknowledged that his administration is managing financial pressures due to inherited debts and unfinished projects from previous governments. He noted ongoing efforts to clear these obligations before fully implementing new initiatives.
Funding for current projects largely depends on locally generated revenue streams such as parking fees and land rates.
