Gabriel Kagombe, the Gatundu South Member of Parliament, encountered a challenging reception from his constituents during his inaugural address at a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) rally. The event highlighted the political tension following his recent defection from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to the opposition party led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
As Kagombe was introduced by Gachagua, residents expressed their displeasure through heckling, reflecting the unease surrounding his political shift. Attempting to win over the crowd, Kagombe likened his transition to the biblical transformation of Saul to Paul, symbolizing a political rebirth. He dramatically discarded his UDA cap and donned a DCP-branded hat, urging the crowd to accept his new allegiance.
Despite his efforts, the audience continued to jeer, signaling skepticism over his move. Kagombe, elected on a UDA ticket in 2022, attributed his defection to growing dissatisfaction among constituents regarding unfulfilled government promises, particularly concerning stalled infrastructure projects and support for tea farmers.
He expressed willingness to undergo DCP's vetting process to validate his political record and reaffirmed his commitment to the new party. Kagombe also thanked the residents for their eventual acceptance despite the initial resistance.
Broader Political Realignment in Central Kenya
Kagombe's defection is part of a wider political reshuffle in Central Kenya, where several leaders who supported President William Ruto in 2022 are reconsidering their affiliations ahead of the 2027 elections. Gachagua emphasized that leaders switching allegiances must face the electorate to legitimize their new positions.
The DCP is actively consolidating its presence in the Mt Kenya region, traditionally a significant political bloc. The region’s political landscape has become increasingly fragmented following disagreements between President Ruto and Gachagua.
Regional Divisions and Development Concerns
Amid these political shifts, debates persist over Mt Kenya’s political unity. Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku advocates for Mt Kenya East counties to pursue an independent political and development agenda, citing disparities in resource allocation and infrastructure development compared to Mt Kenya West.
This stance faces opposition from Gachagua-aligned leaders who warn that dividing Mt Kenya could weaken the region’s collective influence in the upcoming elections.
