Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe has expressed skepticism over Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s ability to secure the Mount Kenya region's support for President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a televised interview on 12 August 2026, Kagombe challenged the assumption that Kindiki remains a key asset for Ruto's campaign, arguing that the Deputy President cannot guarantee the critical regional votes.
Mbeere North By-Election Highlights Weakness
Kagombe cited the recent Mbeere North by-election as evidence, noting that despite Kindiki’s heavy involvement in campaigning, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate narrowly won by just about 300 votes. He described this slim margin as indicative of Kindiki’s limited influence in mobilising the Mount Kenya electorate.
"He cannot deliver the mountain," Kagombe stated emphatically, referring to the entire Mount Kenya region.
Questions Over Kindiki’s Standing in UDA
Beyond electoral concerns, Kagombe suggested that Kindiki’s political relevance within the ruling party is diminishing. He implied that internal dynamics in UDA may be sidelining the Deputy President as the 2027 elections approach.
"The writing is on the wall," Kagombe said, adding that Ruto is aware Kindiki’s value in delivering votes is limited and may reconsider their political partnership.
Kagombe’s Shift to Opposition
Gabriel Kagombe himself has left UDA to join the opposition, joining a growing number of Mount Kenya legislators distancing themselves from the Ruto administration ahead of the next general election.
