A French family endured a harrowing ordeal after their rented jet ski capsized off the coast of Koh Samui, Thailand, leaving them stranded at sea for more than 16 hours.
The 50-year-old father and his young sons were rescued around 10:00 local time on Friday after failing to return the jet ski by the agreed time Thursday evening. Local official Amorn Chomchoey reported the trio were pale and exhausted, having swallowed significant amounts of seawater.
According to reports, the father rented the jet ski for a 45-minute ride near the popular tourist island at about 17:00 local time. Rough waves reportedly caused the engine to stall, leaving them adrift as night fell.
Rescue teams launched an extensive search using speedboats and jet skis, combing waters around Koh Samui and towards nearby Koh Phangan. Efforts were paused overnight before the family was located the following morning.
After being brought ashore, the father and sons underwent medical checks but were discharged shortly thereafter. Their mother and older sister had been waiting anxiously on the beach during the rescue.
Officials confirmed the family has continued their holiday in Thailand following the incident.
