Former Chief Justice David Maraga is set to begin a three-week tour across the United States starting September 17, aiming to engage Kenyans living abroad ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Maraga, the United Green Movement (UGM) presidential candidate, plans to visit diaspora communities in states including Delaware, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Georgia.
Engaging the Diaspora as Key Partners
Highlighting the importance of the diaspora, Maraga emphasized that the 2010 Kenyan Constitution recognises Kenyans abroad as full partners in the country's development, not just sources of remittances.
“Our Constitution recognises the Diaspora as full partners in Kenya's future, not just a source of remittances,” he stated.
The United States is Kenya’s largest source of diaspora remittances, contributing more than half of the total inflows. Estimates from Maraga’s campaign suggest the diaspora sends between Sh380 billion and Sh405 billion annually in cash and in-kind support.
Building on Nationwide Engagements
This US tour follows Maraga’s extensive Ukatiba Caravan, during which he visited 43 counties from February to April 2026 to discuss governance, constitutionalism, and Kenya’s democratic prospects.
The upcoming engagements will allow Maraga to listen to diaspora concerns, share his political agenda, and further conversations started during the nationwide tour.
International and Diaspora Outreach
Maraga is also expected to meet international leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, discussing Kenya’s governance and development challenges.
This outreach aims to position his presidential campaign within broader global discussions while mobilizing support among Kenyan voters abroad as political actors gear up for the 2027 election.
