Authorities have taken five suspects into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of Nathan Masai Wasama, a 61-year-old businessman, in Cheptais, Bungoma County.
On the night of August 8, 2026, Wasama was shot at his shop located in Tuikut Trading Centre. The incident also left a woman injured, who is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
Details of the Incident
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that four individuals arrived on two motorcycles. One of the pillion riders entered Wasama’s shop and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Arrests and Evidence
- Immediately following the killing, Oscar Koech Sakong was arrested based on credible intelligence.
- On August 11, DCI officers executed a raid in Marigo Village, resulting in the arrest of Wycliffe Chesubei Ngeiwa (alias Chota) and Geoffrey Makwere Masai. The search yielded various items including a military-style smoke jacket, a stun grenade, multiple weapons, motorcycles, and electronic devices.
- On August 12, two additional suspects, Robert Kimutai Psisei (also known as Robert Miti) and Brian Chongin Kaos, voluntarily surrendered to police at Cheptais and Chwele stations respectively.
Ongoing Investigation
All five suspects are currently in custody and undergoing processing ahead of arraignment. The DCI is pursuing custodial orders to facilitate further inquiries and plans to charge the individuals once investigations conclude.
Authorities continue to search for other possible suspects and are working to determine the motive behind the killing.
