Five individuals sustained gunshot wounds in a shooting incident at Virginia State University (VSU) early Saturday morning, with one victim in critical condition.
The shooting occurred outside residence halls at approximately 1:28 a.m. local time. Emergency responders transported all injured persons to nearby hospitals. Four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to university officials.
Following the incident, the campus was placed under a temporary lockdown, which was later lifted. However, a substantial law enforcement presence remains on site as authorities continue their investigation.
The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the inquiry with support from local and campus law enforcement agencies. No arrests have been reported so far, and it is unclear if any suspects have been identified.
Virginia State University, located about 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, is a historically black university with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students. The shooting comes just days before the start of the new academic term, with dormitories having opened for returning students on Friday.
