First Lady Janet Museveni was visibly emotional during the graduation ceremony of her grandson, Second Lieutenant Ruhamya Kainerugaba, at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

Ruhamya, the eldest son of Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, successfully completed a rigorous 44-week officer training course. The course included infantry tactics, fieldcraft, operational planning, and leadership training before his official commissioning on August 7, 2026, during the academy's Sovereign's Parade.

His graduation marks the continuation of a family legacy, making Ruhamya the third generation of the Museveni family to serve in the military, following his grandfather President Yoweri Museveni and his father General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Before attending Sandhurst, Ruhamya enlisted as a private soldier in the UPDF in June 2025, earning his place in the prestigious British academy through merit rather than family connections.

Alongside Ruhamya, fellow Ugandan cadet Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo received the International Sword award, recognising him as the top international student in their cohort.

President Museveni personally welcomed the graduates at State House on August 17, expressing gratitude and highlighting the importance of military service in building strong young citizens.
