The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has officially announced the recruitment process to fill the vacant position of director general, following the departure of Daniel Kiptoo.

Established under the Energy Act of 2019, EPRA is the regulatory body overseeing Kenya's electric power, petroleum, coal, and renewable energy sectors. The authority published the vacancy on August 18, 2026, inviting qualified Kenyan citizens to apply.

Role and Responsibilities

The director general will provide strategic leadership and regulatory oversight across the entire energy sector. Key duties include:

  • Regulating electric power utilities involved in generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Supervising petroleum operations such as importation, refining, transportation, and storage.
  • Overseeing renewable energy sources including solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, tidal, and hydropower.
  • Maintaining strong internal governance and control within EPRA.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Kenyan citizenship.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, environmental studies, economics, or energy from a recognized university.
  • A master's degree in a relevant field is advantageous.
  • At least seven years of senior management experience, with a minimum of two years in the petroleum and energy sector.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body in good standing.
  • Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 concerning integrity and ethical conduct.

The successful candidate will be offered a three-year contract, renewable once based on performance and subject to retirement regulations.
