Elvis Opiyo, identified as the prime suspect in the March 2026 acid attack on Mary Clare, was found dead in his rented apartment in Umoja, Nairobi, just hours after allegedly receiving a dismissal letter from the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
According to sources close to the case, Elvis had been summoned by NIS and traveled from his rural home to Nairobi about two days before his death. He reportedly informed his wife by phone that he had been dismissed from his job.
Elvis was discovered lying on his back with no visible external injuries at his Amani Court residence. A friend, alerted by Elvis's wife after he stopped answering calls, found his body and a dismissal letter nearby. The friend then reported the incident to the Umoja Patrol Base.
Investigation and Postmortem Findings
- A postmortem examination indicated that Elvis died from ingesting poison, with police classifying the death as self-inflicted.
- The examination took place the same day Elvis's family began arrangements to transport his body to Nyanza for burial.
- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is leading the ongoing investigation, awaiting full toxicology results.
Elvis's death occurred less than 24 hours after another suspect linked to a separate acid attack case, in which Elvis was the prime suspect, was arrested and arraigned in Kiambu court. The individual remains in custody at Kabete Police Station.
