Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has strongly denied any connection to the murder of former Chesikaki Ward councillor Nathan Masai Wasama and refuted allegations that firearms were discovered at his residence.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Kapondi described the accusations as misleading and unfounded. He emphasized that he had never threatened Wasama, who was also interested in contesting the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2027 election.
"My conscience is clear. I have never been involved in harming political opponents, and Wasama was not my adversary," Kapondi stated. He added that no police summons or investigations have implicated him in the case.
Kapondi also challenged claims made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who alleged that 18 firearms and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition were found at Kapondi’s home in connection with Wasama’s death. Kapondi dismissed these as baseless and urged Gachagua to reconsider his statements.
Wasama, aged 61, was fatally shot by assailants riding motorcycles at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre on the night of August 6, 2026. His death has sparked political tensions, with Gachagua accusing Kapondi of involvement and suggesting that government-owned firearms were misused.
Authorities have arrested five suspects linked to the murder, who are currently assisting with investigations. Meanwhile, concerns over security in Mt Elgon remain high as the probe continues.
