The Office of the Fourth President of Kenya has officially dismissed a circulating document falsely claiming that former President Uhuru Kenyatta declined repeated meeting requests from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This fabricated statement, presented as an official press release and bearing the name and signature of Kanze Dena, purports that Gachagua sought a meeting with Uhuru through intermediaries, which was ultimately refused. It also includes comments on Gachagua's political relations that have no basis in fact.
The office cautioned the public not to treat the document as an authentic communication from the retired president's office.
Context of Political Relations
The fake statement emerges amid ongoing public interest in the dynamics between Uhuru Kenyatta and Rigathi Gachagua. Earlier this year, Gachagua indicated that the United Opposition might seek Uhuru's support ahead of the 2027 General Election if necessary, despite confidence in their ability to challenge President William Ruto independently.
Gachagua emphasized that while the opposition can currently compete without external help, they would not hesitate to approach Uhuru should the political landscape demand it. He stated, "If the situation demands that we recall Uhuru from retirement to come and help us fix this country and get good governance, we shall do so. I will personally go to his home and ask that he helps us, but we are fine so far."
Defending Uhuru's Political Engagement
Allies of President Ruto have criticized Uhuru, accusing him of divisive politics and attempts to destabilize the government. In response, Uhuru has asserted his constitutional right to participate in national discourse despite his retirement.
Gachagua also defended Uhuru's continued political involvement, underscoring his rights to freedom of expression and political participation. He stated, "He is our leader, and you cannot say that because he is retired, his mind is also retired. He still has an opinion and constitutional rights."
