DCI to Engage Boda Boda Riders in Fight Against Drug Trafficking in Mombasa
DCI partners with boda boda leaders in Mombasa to gather intelligence on drug traffickers and curb narcotics abuse among riders.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has unveiled a strategy to involve boda boda riders in the battle against drug trafficking in Mombasa County. The initiative aims to harness the riders’ unique position within communities to report suspicious activities related to narcotics.
Collaboration with Local Authorities
Through the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Mtwapa, the DCI joined forces with the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Administration Police Service (APS), and local administration to sensitize boda boda leaders in Shanzu Ward. The engagement took place at Mwembe Legeza Village and gathered around 50 boda boda chairpersons and community representatives, including the Assistant County Commissioner, area chief, and Bamburi police officers.
Addressing Drug Abuse and Road Safety
The sensitization highlighted the growing problem of narcotic drug abuse among boda boda riders, the types of drugs commonly trafficked in the region, and the link between substance abuse and road accidents. The DCI emphasized the critical role boda boda riders can play in identifying and reporting drug trafficking activities.
- Riders are encouraged to share timely information on suspected drug traffickers.
- Community participation is key to disrupting drug networks.
- Such partnerships promote safer neighborhoods.
Participants pledged to cooperate closely with law enforcement agencies to help detect and apprehend offenders. The DCI views this collaboration as part of its broader effort to strengthen community involvement in combating narcotics and enhancing public safety.
