Coventry City has completed the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest in a deal reportedly worth £9 million ($12 million). The transfer comes as Coventry prepares for their first Premier League season in 25 years.
Awoniyi, who has been capped 10 times by Nigeria, will join Frank Lampard's squad in time for their season opener against reigning champions Arsenal on Friday.
Career and Impact
The 29-year-old forward spent four seasons at Nottingham Forest, scoring 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions. Despite a strong start, he lost his place in the team during the previous season.
Awoniyi's time at Forest was marked by a serious health scare in May 2025, when he was placed in an induced coma after rupturing an intestine in a collision during a match against Leicester City.
Farewell and Future
Before his departure, Awoniyi was honored by Nottingham Forest with a guard of honor during a pre-season friendly against Brest, underscoring his contribution to the club.
Commenting on the move, Awoniyi expressed excitement about joining Coventry City and praised the team’s remarkable performance in their promotion-winning Championship campaign.
"I am very excited about this season and eager to start working with my new teammates," he said. "They were incredible last season, and I am thrilled to be part of their Premier League journey."
Club Statements
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis acknowledged Awoniyi’s significance to the club, stating, "Taiwo will always hold a special place in our history. He has been pivotal in our journey and has given our supporters unforgettable moments."
Awoniyi joins a growing list of new signings at Coventry City, including Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda, and Caleb Yirenkyi, as the club aims to establish itself in the top flight.
