Construction of the 10,000-seat Gakoigo Stadium is underway in Samar, located within Maragua Constituency, Murang’a County. The project was relocated from its original historic site at Gakoigo grounds following a technical review that deemed the initial location unsuitable for the planned facility’s size.
Relocation and Retention of Historic Name
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced the shift, explaining that the original Gakoigo grounds lacked sufficient space and faced terrain limitations, making it impossible to accommodate a stadium of this scale. The decision followed consultations with local residents and landowners, some of whom faced potential relocation.
Despite the move, the project will retain the Gakoigo name in recognition of the site's historical significance, as it has served as a showground for the Agricultural Society of Kenya and a public recreation area since before independence.

The project was redesigned into a dual-facility model: the new international-standard stadium is being built in Samar, while the original grounds will be refurbished into a training centre and venue for grassroots and mid-level sports competitions.
Funded with Ksh900 million by the State Department for Sports, the construction began in March 2026 with an expected completion timeline of nine months. The new stadium aims to provide a modern venue for football and athletics, enhancing opportunities for athletes and sports enthusiasts in Murang’a County.
