Bolt has enhanced its Send parcel delivery service in Mombasa by incorporating motorbikes, providing individuals and businesses with a new option for transporting small packages across the city.
This service targets small retailers, online sellers, restaurants, pharmacies, offices, and individuals requiring quick or short-distance deliveries. Customers can request Bolt Send via the Bolt app, receive upfront pricing, and track parcels in real time.
Deliveries are carried out by qualified Bolt driver-partners on motorcycles, enabling businesses to avoid the costs of maintaining their own delivery fleets. The move leverages Mombasa's extensive motorcycle transport network, which includes approximately 20,000 boda boda riders operating across the county's six sub-counties.
Currently, Bolt works with over 1,000 active riders in Mombasa, who earn income through the platform weekly. Adding motorbikes to the Send service offers these riders additional earning opportunities alongside existing services.
According to Bolt, motorbikes help small parcels navigate Mombasa's traffic more efficiently and reach locations that larger vehicles might find difficult to access. This addresses a practical challenge in urban delivery where small items don’t always require a car but need reliable, cost-effective transport.
Benefits for Businesses and Individuals
- Retailers can deliver orders directly to customers without owning a delivery fleet.
- Businesses can move documents between offices swiftly.
- Online sellers can fulfill orders efficiently.
- Individuals can send parcels across the city without relying on informal transport methods.
Bolt Send was initially launched in Mombasa in March using cars. The addition of motorbikes responds to growing demand for faster goods movement.
Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager for Rides in East Africa at Bolt, emphasized the importance of timely deliveries for small businesses. He stated, "For a small business, a delayed delivery can mean a delayed sale, a missed customer, or an unnecessary operating cost. With Bolt Send on motorbikes, we are making it easier to move smaller parcels around Mombasa using infrastructure that people already know and use."
