Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has addressed the recent public confrontation with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya during a Linda Mwananchi rally held in Kitale.
Speaking to local media on August 12, 2026, Owino characterized the incident as a minor misunderstanding stemming from Natembeya's unfamiliarity with Linda Mwananchi’s event procedures. Natembeya had joined the movement only days prior and is known for his alignment with the United Opposition.
Differences in Rally Conduct
Owino explained that Linda Mwananchi has established ways of managing its rallies, particularly in how speakers such as MPs and senators are invited to address crowds. He said Natembeya attempted to take control of the event, including seizing the microphone from Owino, who is a founding member of the movement.
"His role was to invite the principals to speak and then hand over the microphone to me, but he tried to run the whole show," Owino said. The MP stressed that no outsider should disrupt the movement’s operations.
Other On-Stage Tensions
During the same event, Owino also clashed with Bumula MP Wamboka, who took the microphone from him mid-speech. The confrontation ended with Owino leaving the stage.
Despite these incidents, Owino emphasized that all leaders within Linda Mwananchi are equals, with decisions made collectively rather than unilaterally.
Signs of Friction in the Movement
These episodes come amid growing speculation about internal divisions within Linda Mwananchi, which has expanded from an ODM faction to include politicians from various parties.
Similar tensions have surfaced elsewhere, such as the recent near-fight between Kakamega gubernatorial contenders Cleophas Malala and Boni Khalwale at a separate rally.
