A postmortem examination has established that 44-year-old Maureen Nduku succumbed to complications from a gunshot wound sustained in Gikomba, Nairobi.
According to a relative, Johnson Muema, the bullet penetrated Nduku's intestines causing severe internal damage. This injury allowed harmful bacteria to enter her bloodstream, leading to a widespread infection that affected multiple organs, including her brain.
Nduku was shot on August 3, 2026, when police officers responded with gunfire to reports of robbery and disturbances in the Gikomba area. She later passed away while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The family alleges that officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station were responsible and is urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct a thorough and expedited investigation. They also demand the arrest and suspension of the officers involved pending further action.
Relatives have emphasized that the autopsy findings reinforce their call for accountability and insist on locating the bullet. Despite an earlier apology from a police officer involved, the family insists that justice requires more than apologies.
Meanwhile, preparations for Nduku's burial in Makueni County are underway. There has been no update on a 16-year-old boy, Abdala, who was reportedly injured by the same bullet after it passed through Nduku and is currently receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
