Eligibility Criteria
This exemption applies exclusively to people born in Papua New Guinea before its independence on September 16, 1975, during the period when Australia administered the territory.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that at least one of their parents was born in Australia and held Australian citizenship at the time of their birth.
Secondary Pathway for Children
Children of eligible applicants who hold permanent resident visas may also apply for Australian citizenship through a separate conferral process, offering a route to citizenship without undergoing the standard test.
Context on Citizenship Test Requirements
For other applicants, Australia’s citizenship test remains stringent. Candidates must correctly answer 15 out of 20 questions, including all five questions on Australian values. The test assesses knowledge of Australian society, government, and civic responsibilities.
