Amnesty International Kenya has condemned recent violent incidents linked to political activities in Homa Bay County, calling for urgent investigations into attacks on journalists, property destruction, and security agencies' conduct.

In a statement released on August 16, 2026, the human rights group expressed deep concern over reports of journalists being assaulted, media broadcasts disrupted, road blockades set up, and intimidation tactics used during political mobilization efforts.

Additionally, Amnesty highlighted incidents where accommodation facilities hosting supporters or leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement were targeted, raising serious questions about the respect for constitutional freedoms.

Calls for Accountability and Security

The organisation urged the National Police Service and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to restore security, protect journalists, human rights defenders, political participants, businesses, and residents in the area.

Amnesty Kenya demands prompt, independent, and transparent investigations into all reported violations, including attacks on media personnel, destruction of property, and restrictions on freedom of movement. It stressed that those found culpable—whether private citizens, political figures, or public officials—must be held accountable under the law.

Furthermore, the group called for an independent review of how security agencies responded to ensure they fulfilled their duty to prevent violence and safeguard constitutional rights.

Security Agencies and Political Leaders Under Scrutiny

The calls come amid heightened political tensions during the Linda Mwananchi movement’s recent tour, which faced multiple roadblocks and police deployment. Notably, tear gas was used in Ndhiwa after attempts to block the convoy, coinciding with rallies led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in Nyandiwa, Sindo, and Homa Bay Town.

Warning Ahead of 2027 General Election

Amnesty Kenya cautioned that such violent incidents must not become entrenched in Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.

The organisation stressed that authorities have a duty to guarantee that political actors, journalists, and the public can exercise their constitutional rights without fear or intimidation. It called for equal legal protection and preservation of media independence, warning that impunity for political violence undermines democracy.

Amnesty concluded by urging swift action on violations and ensuring justice for those responsible to restore public confidence and prevent recurrence.
