Airtel Africa has officially launched Starlink Mobile in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), marking the continent's first commercial satellite-to-phone connectivity service. This rollout allows users with compatible smartphones to access basic data services, such as WhatsApp and SMS, in remote areas without terrestrial network coverage.
The DRC becomes the inaugural African market where Starlink Mobile has moved beyond testing to full commercial deployment, following successful trials in Kenya earlier this year. The service operates where users have a clear sky view, offering connectivity without the need for specialized satellite hardware.
Expanding Connectivity Through Partnership
The initiative stems from a strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink, announced in December 2025. Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar highlighted the significance of combining terrestrial and satellite technologies to extend essential communication services beyond conventional infrastructure limits.
"The DRC is leading this important development, and the experience gained here will support the progressive expansion of the service across our markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals," Taldar stated.
Benefits for Remote and Critical Sectors
Airtel DRC Managing Director Theirry Diasnoma emphasized the importance of this service in a country with vast geography and limited network reach. It is expected to support individuals and organizations operating in remote locations, including:
- Transport and logistics operators
- Humanitarian and health workers
- Farmers and mining operations
- Communities outside terrestrial network coverage
Additionally, Starlink Mobile offers a vital communication alternative during emergencies, natural disasters, and network disruptions. After the initial launch phase, access to Starlink Mobile will continue through eligible Airtel data bundles.
